Pear Salad

The bounty of fall means yummy dishes and drinks flavored with pumpkin or squash or apple.  But wait, don’t forget about the subtle pear.  Pears get overlooked, but can add so much to the seasonal salad.

On a recent trip to a local farm, I picked up a bag of freshly picked salad greens, so experimenting with a new salad was on the menu.

From Costco, I bought a whole crate, case, box?  Of pears.  I don’t know what you would call the packaging size, but knowing Costco, there were a lot of pears in there.  Oh, and of course, each one is huge.

I’m quite sure there is at least one more pear recipe coming out of that box, but here is the yummy and easy pear salad I made, drizzled with homemade balsamic vinaigrette.  (When will I learn to spell that word?!)

With a perfect mixture of sweet and tangy, this salad lends itself to using on-hand ingredients.  The pears are mild with just a hint of sweetness and the bright yellow is lovely next to dried cranberries.

Here’s what I did:

Pear Salad Directions

  • 4 cups mixed salad greens
  • 1 thinly sliced pear
  • ¼ – 1/3 cup chopped pecans
  • ¼ dried cranberries
  • ¼ cup crumbled feta
  • Sliced red onion to taste
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Balsamic Vinaigrette

Homemade Balsamic Vinaigrette

This delicious dressing needs no sugar or honey if using a good quality balsamic which is naturally sweet.  I used an immersion blender which makes it slightly thick.

  • ¼ cup balsamic vinegar
  • ¼ cup avocado or olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • Pinch of salt and pepper

Shake vigorously or blend for a thicker dressing.

What I’m Reading

With great excitement, I am announcing my dear friend and former colleague, Jamison Whiteman has written and published a novel!

The Quietude of Calvary is available on Kindle for $2.99 on Amazon.  DF Jamie is retired as a naval commander, but don’t be fooled by the word “Calvary.”  It’s a place not to be confused with “cavalry” – a horse-mounted army unit.

I love thinking about how similar those words are, yet unrelated.

Time travel is one of my favorite subjects and I cannot wait to deeply delve into this read.  I think I can mention time travel without spoiling anything.

I was honored to be asked for some feedback while the book was in progress so I’m somewhat familiar with it.  Jamie’s command of science, history, religion and language is apparent and if you select this book, you won’t be disappointed.

Wrap Up

This is really a fun time of year here.  So many activities and so many friends in town.  There really isn’t enough time for work.  Hmmm, seems like I might be rectifying that situation soon. Wink, wink.

DF Barb and I were commenting on how nice it is to see the gym full of people working out, staying healthy and smiling. Group exercise classes are full again for the season and it’s important to sign up and stake out a space early.

Walking and biking are enjoyable any time of the day – not just when the sun is low.

Now if we can just get rid of those bugs.

Have a wonderful weekend and I hope you find a little time for reading a good book!
