Leisure Reading

May 2023 Potpourri

Taking a few moments to catch up on this and that so here is May 2023 potpourri.  Thanks for coming along!

Outdoor Time

Bonking you over the head week after week with what I love outdoors seems to be the theme.  Sorry about that if you hate the great outdoors.

The club planted new annuals this week and the fresh little zinnia blossoms with tons of bright colors were so cheery I just had to share them.

The desert is still lovely with lots of things in bloom after our crazy wet winter.  But it won’t last much longer and this little oasis of color makes my day.

What I’m Reading

I have a feeling it’s been a really long time since I’ve posted my reading.  If you’re looking for a recommendation or what you might want to skip, tune in!

Audiobooks

Lone Stars by Mike Lupica is really a YA book but the middle school voices have more wisdom than anyone I know under the age of 40.  If you love football, I mean, really, really love football, listen to this one.  I liked it, but I skipped some of the Friday night games.  Recommend (if you like football).

Shadow Game by Christine Feehan tricked me into thinking it was a thriller when it was a romance.  And I just couldn’t.  Sorry.  Did not finish (DNF).

The Midnight Club by Christopher Pike is another YA but it was interestingly and creatively crafted with a really good ending.  Recommend.

In the Blood by Jack Carr and narrated by Ray Porter is a renegade, yet righteous ex-SEAL story.  When I run out of my beloved Orphan X reading, I turn to James Reece and I’m not disappointed.  Anywhere Mr. Ray Porter wants to take me, I’m on board.  So good.  Recommend (if a little violence doesn’t bother you).

Child of God by Cormac McCarthy is a “Good Lord in Heaven, why am I listening to this?!”  The Road is a McCarthy classic and was so good, so I thought this would be a good choice.  Oh, and they made a movie from it.  Let’s just say I’m recommending it if you love excellent writing.  But if the most insane people you can imagine committing heinous acts bothers you, skip it.

Tallgrass by Sandra Dallas.  Oh, this is such a sweet book to me.  It is historical and suspenseful and well-written.  It takes place in Colorado in during WWII and the author (who I later found out attended the same university as I) writes about department stores and streets and places that I clearly and affectionately remember growing up there (even if it wasn’t in the 1940s!).  This is a recommend for sure.  Even if you’re not from Colorado.

On Kindle

Murder Book by Thomas Perry is the latest by this wonderful author.  There are too many characters and too much crazy crime activities to almost follow.  Not his best book, but I read everything he writes and I’m not sorry I spent a little time on this one.  Recommend.

On Target by Mark Greaney is my third place crazy espionage thriller after Orphan X and James Reece.  This is the second of the “Gray Man” series.  I admit to skipping a few pages here and there when details were bogging me down.  If you’re desperate for a little action, get this one.

Whew, are you still with me?  That was a long one.

What I’m Eating

Soup and Salad!  I posted my yummy green salad earlier this week.  I paired it with Skinnytaste’s Roasted Red Pepper Soup and a half a ciabatta for a hearty meal.

Whisps Cheese Crisps topped the soup and were perfect.  They stayed crisp until the last bite and gave me the feeling I was having a grilled cheese with my soup.

Here are the nutrition details if you are thinking of adding these to your meal.

Memorial Day

Whether you are spending this weekend shopping, grilling, traveling or swimming, I hope you take time to honor our brave who gave their lives for our country.  And I triple hope you are keeping safe doing whatever you’re doing.

God bless.
