Celebrate May

Just in case anyone else is as surprised as I am, **BOOM** May is already here.  I know.  Weren’t we just decorating for Thanksgiving?  How does this always happen?

In any case, there is a lot to celebrate in May and I want to get a head start on it.  And maybe motivate you to add some celebrations to kick off summer.

There are a lot of birthdays and anniversaries in my loved ones’ life and right here, right now, I say, “Happy birthday and I love you!”

Today I’m sharing some of the lesser-known, old-fashioned and probably forgotten May celebrations. And, of course, big ways to celebrate May.

May Day

When we were little May Day, also known as May 1st,  was a big deal in our house.  We would collect wild flowers (maybe flowers picked from neighbors’ gardens isn’t really considered wild?) and gift bouquets to our mom.

My mom was super creative and she would craft adorable baskets to contain our little gifts of love.

Does anyone celebrate May Day anymore?  I mean all those April showers bringing May flowers should be good for something right?

If you remember May Day baskets, you might want to hang a little basket on a doorknob with fresh flowers and let me know how it feels.

I picked up a bouquet of small pink roses at Trader Joe’s and while they don’t exactly smell like roses, they cheer me nonetheless.

National Day of Prayer

The first Thursday of May, which this year is also May 1st, is the National Day of Prayer.  Since 1952 the US government has set aside a day dedicated to prayer.

Personally, I pray a lot.  As in a lot.  I need to!  And btw, I’m here for that if you are in need of it.

But an organized event seems like a nice way to gather our energy and voices and lift to God.  I checked out the site for prayer gatherings near me and there are several churches, coffee houses, and towns hosting early morning, evening and all-day events.

Kentucky Derby

The Derby is the first Saturday in May and if you have a local track or can join a party televising the race, it is such a fun day.

The horses are magnificent, the hats are over the top and the juleps are flowing.

Last year we attended the big party at Turf Paradise and had such a good time.  We didn’t win anything of course.

Mother’s Day

The second Sunday of the month is Mother’s Day which falls on May 11th this year.

Buttermilk Biscuit Day

How did I never know May 14th is biscuit day?  If you’ve been here for long, you know I love me a good biscuit.

National Road Trip Day

Again, another holiday I didn’t know was a thing.  The Friday before Memorial Day (May 23rd) is set aside as a holiday.  Yahoo!

We recently took a road trip along the Arizona stretch of Route 66, but we are always loading up the car and heading out on the road.

I especially enjoy looking at road signs and nature.  I especially do NOT enjoy bad drivers.  Don’t get me started.

We are blessed to have such dear friends that are just a road trip away. And consider this your warning: We are eventually coming your way!

Check out this post for tips on preparing for a road trip.

Memorial Day

Monday, May 26th marks Memorial Day this year.  We generally attend the ceremony in our town at the Veteran’s Memorial.

We also take the opportunity to try out a few good BBQ recipes.

I think I’ll do a dedicated prep for Memorial Day later in the month.

Wrap Up

So, tell us what plans you have for celebrations this month?  It’s my philosophy we should savor every moment we can.

As always, God bless you and yours and know that when I type these words I am saying a little prayer over you.
