The First Room I Reset After the Holidays

Christmas is over.

And I’m always one of the first to take holiday decorations down.

While I love the cozy feel in the evenings of warm candlelight and twinkling fairylights amidst greenery, the house feels a little tired. And cluttered. And kinda dusty.

And if a total reset is out of the question in one day, I always start with one room.

It changes everything.

The One Room I Always Reset First

The Kitchen

First of all the kitchen can always use a little tidying up after even the most ordinary of days.

But after Christmas, it takes an additional hit. A little more baking, a little more prep and a few more trips for snacking at night.

I’ve found a calmer kitchen makes everyday life feel easier.

And while I was doing the reset, hub made a big grocery run (including Costco) so the kitchen is also restocked.

Why Starting Here Works

Since we eat most every meal at home, we are in the kitchen multiple times a day. So we feel the impact of a clean, calm space immediately. And often!

Our routines – like early a.m. coffee – are easier because everything is back to normal. No little decorations to work around.

And in just one room, momentum for the rest of the house has begun.

My Simple Kitchen Reset

This is not a deep cleaning session. Just a few steps.

All the visutal clutter is cleared. The extra holidays items go into the top cabinet shelf and the greenery into it’s bin in the garage.

A quick fridge sweep lets me know what we have, what we need and shows me what I need to toss.

The beverage station gets a little attention and then the drawer under it.

I don’t technically have a “junk” drawer. I prefer for everything to have a home.

So let’s call this drawer the pot holder/lighter/charger drawer. Okay, it’s a junk drawer.

And while it wasn’t terrible, I tidied it up and cleaned up some cocoa that had mysteriously spilled on the drawer organizer.

Enlist an Assistant

Of course, you know I wasn’t doing this alone. I had so much help.

The best part was when she hopped on the kitchen table and knocked down to the floor what she could before I could chase her off.

Redecorate the Arched Cabinet

My pet food cabinet was the one big space that I decorated for Christmas, so after that all came down, I took the opportunity to redecorate it with a few pretties I haven’t seen in a while.

Refresh the Lazy Susan

The faux tulips I bought from Amazon over three years ago still look brand new. What a great purchase. The yellow and red ones in a small vase really add a tiny pop of color and early spring I’m craving right now.

Wrap Up

I hope this one little reset I’m sharing motivates you to start with your kitchen.

And then slowly work on your other spaces.

My house already feels lighter and more like me.

Thank you for spending time with me this weekend.
