Some Advice, Please

Help!  I need some advice, please.  It’s a long, convoluted story, so refill your cup o’ joe, sit back and give a girl a hand here.

On the list of things we want to do this year is spiff up our bedroom and better use the vast wasteland of square footage there.

A new sitting area, another bathroom remodel, closet organizers?  You can see those are all big ticket items and so overwhelming.

Plus hub installed an Elfa system in my closet four years and it still works well for me.

Here’s a list of what needs to be addressed and what has me in a state of inertia (is that the right word?).

Current Bedroom Furniture

Our bedroom furniture is from Stanley and was purchased when we moved to Tucson.  That would be in 2008.  So doing my math here (!) it’s going on 16 years old.  Should anyone have to keep furniture 16 years?

But it’s still in really good shape and I pretty much still like the style.

Sure, I’d like something a tad bit more contemporary, but at the end of the day, my style hasn’t really changed much.

And now “old world” is an IN thing and I could classify it as such.

If I were to get all new, I would have to address what to do with the old.  Sell it?  And moving it out is a pretty big deal.  The armoire is big.

Your advice, please.

Current Sitting Area

Right now our sitting area consists of this buffalo check arm chair and ottoman and our puzzle table.  It’s really not a good use of the space.

Ideally, I would like to get a second identical chair but it was from Pier 1 and is no longer available.  Getting something to match is out of the question and I have no idea what would possibly coordinate.

An option is to totally get new sitting room furniture and scrap the chair.  But I still like it.

The lamp is okay, but the shade has some blemishes and it probably should be a gold tone and it probably should be a foot or two taller.

Here is a picture of one of my inspiration rooms which makes a cool hangout space.

Your advice, please.

Remodel

Our bathroom is full of wasted space and the shower situation is less than ideal.  We had our bathroom updated several years ago and while it looks nice (certainly better than before), it’s still not great.

If we stay in this house another ten years, I don’t want to live with that bathroom.

If we find the perfect townhouse to downsize and continue living in our neighborhood, I’d rather move.  Unfortunately, that townhouse doesn’t exist.

Any real estate developers out there that can help me out?

Closets

We have his and hers closets which are great but they also become hidey holes for a bunch of junk.  Organization could really maximize the space.  Adding electricity to all of our closets would allow us to plug in small appliances and get them hidden away.

But I hate to hire an electrician for that if we’re going to be doing a bigger job.

Wrap Up

And then, to wrap it all up is the issue with labor.  Finding a good contractor, finding the right materials and um, paying for it is all a big hurdle.

I obviously need to work with a designer and possibly an architect, but I feel so rudderless.

Your advice, please.

Thanks for being here with me this week and I look forward to hearing your comments!

  1. Sorry for the delay! First of all I love your master bathroom. What is wrong with it? Then I agree that the sitting area in the bedroom needs something. I like your inspiration picture if the two matching chairs with the love table.. Don’t think a bar is necessary in the bedroom, but maybe a tall corner piece a different lamp. Would be nice . I like your bedroom set. What about a small couch with side table and lamp still with a corner piece. That is my ideas

  2. Sorry I got nothin’ for you my sis’ . I’m in a similar boat. My main to do is that bathroom. Gotta pull out the planning list for it and start
