Costco Produce Haul

On the hunt for decent produce (especially fruit), I decided to bite the bullet and get the large quantities Costco sells.

Costco’s bulk sizes on many items (like paper goods and OTC drugs) is no problem if you have the storage space.

But it’s a little off-putting with produce that won’t keep when you’re a family of one or two.  And to be clear only one of us consumes most of these items.  Ahem, that would be me.

And it’s not super cheap.

But.  This year.  Prices are high everywhere, quality is iffy and I can hardly find anything in the regular grocery stores.

So I made a gigantic Costco run this week and bit the bullet on produce.

Veggies

Tomatoes stored at room temperature is the best.  But with two large containers – one cherry tomatoes and one tomatoes on the vine – I am just storing a daily amount on the counter and the rest goes in the fridge.

I bought two kinds of lettuce – romaine and a leaf lettuce mix for salads.  The romaine doesn’t look great and I should have passed on it.  But hub uses it for sandwiches since he’s gluten free (mostly 😉).

The large bag of peppers is not a problem.  They keep quite a while in the fridge and what doesn’t get used on a cruditĂ© platter, will get roasted and made into yummy soup.

The little cukes are crazy expensive, so we’ve been eating them daily.  They are delish, so I don’t want them going into the trash.

Fruits

Bananas in a huge bunch seems like a gamble to purchase, but number 1, they are green so won’t be ready for a bit and number 2, when they get overripe I pop them in the freezer for bread or smoothies.

It’s great to have access to bananas.  We don’t buy them frequently because they ripen so quickly.

Have you heard of golden kiwi?  I know, me neither!  They almost don’t taste like kiwi.  They are so sweet.  And good.  I put half on the counter and stored the rest in the produce bin the in the fridge.

A Sprouts employee told me he prefers the Driscoll brand of strawberries over all of them.  Costco carries that brand and I have to agree they are so good.  The container I got had great berries.  Large and ripe.

Cuties last a long time in the fridge.  And since I eat two and three at a time they’ll go quickly.

Wrap Up

We have made good progress on the produce consumption this week.  I’ll let you know if I end up pitching anything, but I’m making an effort not to.  And to appreciate all the bounty of the season.

Thanks for coming along to Costco with me.  And making a produce haul.

Oh, and BTW, that place was insanely busy.  In the middle of the day.  On a Tuesday.  I can’t imagine going on a Saturday.

What is on your weekend agenda?
