DIY Tall Trellises

Out of control jasmine plants that had outgrown their adorable dragonfly trellises inspired us to a new project – DIY Tall Trellises.

And guess what?  Trellises are expensive.  And tall ones are really expensive.

Social media to the rescue.  I watched a YT video where a family made a beautiful large trellis from a livestock fence.  I know, sexy, huh?

So, a new big ol’ project for hub and a visit to Tractor Supply instead of the usual run to Home Depot.

What He Bought

• 2 each 8 ft x 50 in metal cattle feedlot fence panels ($45 for two panels)
• 2 cans khaki colored spray paint (to coordinate with our outside wall color) ($20 for 2 cans)
• 12 each 5/32 in zinc screw hooks ($6 for package)
• Bolt cutter to remove the old trellises ($12)

What He Did

Since these trellises are the first thing you see when coming up our walk, we decided to paint them to match the outside wall.  The spray paint didn’t go quite as far as John thought it would and he ended up buying a second can.  Which he found at Ace.

To remove the tangled jasmine from the current trellises, we would have either needed to completely cut back the plants or cut off the trellises.  Hub needed a bolt cutter for that which he found at Harbor Freight.

The 8 foot length of the panel is really the height because we turned the fence sideways.  And 8’ is just a bit too tall for our wall.  Enter the bolt cutters again to cut off about ½ foot.

He used 6 big screw hooks for each trellis to secure them to the walls.  These he found at Home Depot.

We started weaving the jasmine up the new trellises and after they fill in they will look really good.  Getting the runners off the ground is important because that provides a hiding space for snakes.  Who have no business near my front door.

The old trellises were of course no good after they were bolt-cut, but the dragonflies were so cute, I rescued them and placed them around in the jasmine for a little style.

For less than $100 we have two new trellises for our beautiful plants.  Purchasing anything that size from a store or online would cost around $200 each at a minimum.

John had to run to a lot of stores to track down the supplies but he did a great job and I couldn’t be happier.

Around Town

Our small town of Anthem, Arizona is so patriotic and makes me so proud.  DF Barb took a picture of the fountain at the entry of the community.  American flags are placed all along the sidewalks.  If I’m not mistaken, the Boy Scouts place them there at each patriotic holiday.

Our community also hosts a Memorial Day Ceremony at our Veteran’s Memorial.  It’s so touching and well done.  DF Evon’s group, Musical Theatre of Anthem, provides live music.  Their Outreach Group sings the National Anthem, God Bless America and Battle Hymn of the Republic.
