As most of the country is still reveling in spring, we are already in full-fledged summer here. And with Memorial Day right around the corner, I wanted to welcome the season with a lighter refresh in our bedroom.
Not theme décor exactly, but something that still works with our neutral desert home.
As summer approaches, I’m reminded to slow down, practice gratitude, welcome back simple traditions (hello, patio season!), and create spaces in our home that feel both comforting and restful.
My Favorite Summer Bedroom Elements
This refresh actually started with Hub mentioning how much he liked the Pottery Barn Americana Flag Reversible Quilt.
Side note: Pottery Barn currently labels this quilt as NEW, but it’s actually been around for a couple of years now.
And as with most Pottery Barn bedding, it’s a little pricey for our household.
But at the end of last season, it went on major sale and I scooped it right up. It was honestly so hard leaving it tucked away on the top shelf all winter long.
With Memorial Day approaching — and 100°+ temperatures already arriving — it finally felt like time to make the bedroom summer-ready.

Here are the elements I used:
- quilt
- striped throw
- woven textures
- light linens

How to Keep Patriotic Decor Sophisticated
As much as I love the flag quilt, I didn’t want the room screaming RED, WHITE & BLUE.
Instead, I focused on:
- restraint
- layered neutrals
- vintage-inspired textiles
- muted, faded color

Why Americana Works in a Desert Home
The faded blues in the quilt are especially beautiful and almost have a worn denim feel. I could easily see this style working in a coastal home too.
Our warm wood tones and creamy furniture keep the room feeling organic rather than farmhouse.

The natural linen textures coordinate beautifully with the softer neutral elements throughout our home, and while the quilt definitely has a vintage inspiration, it still blends surprisingly well with our more contemporary furnishings.
I actually found the perfect artwork for above the bed and it’s currently on order, but I wanted to share the summer refresh in time for Memorial Day weekend.
I’ve learned not to rush finishing touches anymore. Sometimes living with a space for a while helps you discover the pieces that truly belong there — and I think I finally found them.
I’ll definitely share an update once the artwork arrives because I’m really excited about it.
Wrap Up
So what do you think?
Did I manage to create that nostalgic countryside / quiet summer morning / relaxed Americana feeling I was hoping for?
I wanted the room to feel:
- airy
- relaxed
- summery
- slightly sophisticated
- and still appropriate for our neutral desert home
Oh — and apparently we’re not making the bed today.

Thank you for starting off summer with me. I hope you have wonderful plans for the holiday weekend.
May God richly bless you and yours.
