Thrift with Me

Thanks for spending some time while I visit my favorite local senior-dog rescue shop, and thrift with me.

The impetus (is that a word?) for a recent visit to Rusty’s was to look for some barware.

If that seems random, stay with me here.

Our bar is in a corner off the beaten path of our house and since we don’t frequently use it, I haven’t given it much attention.

But lately I’ve seen lovely decorated bars and I am inspired to fox up that area a bit.

But, again, since we don’t really use the bar too often, I don’t want to spend big bucks on it.

So a trip to Rusty’s was in order.

Thrift stores are a great place to get ordinary and unusual items you didn’t even know you need.

Here’s what I found this trip.

Clothes, Shoes, Bags, Jewelry

There was only one large rack of clothes on display and they were 50% off so the store may be trying to reduce or eliminate clothes sales.

Online stores such as Thredup have become really popular for both selling your gently used items and for finding brands you want.

You might remember my friend Leslie has fantastic resell items on Mercari. Here is a link to her store with beautiful finds.

The bags didn’t look too spry on this trip. I checked out the Vera Bradley tote you can spot on the far left. In my opinion, $25 was too much for a bag with worn handles.

But it will get purchased and a senior dog will be better off for it ❤️ .

Home Décor and Picture Frames

Thrifting is the perfect time to search for picture frames. Even in you don’t need a new piece of art, the frame alone can be an excellent buy and just the thing you need for a project or for a spruce up.

Crafting Supplies

New to me on this trip was a big section of the store dedicated to all sorts of crafting supplies.

The items were well organized and in good shape.

Look at all that embroidery thred!

Books, Movies, Puzzles, CDs

Rusty’s has a comfy little chair next to the book shelves so shoppers can take their time perusing the books.

I love taking a peek and seeing a book I read a long time ago and smiling bigly with an unexpected happy memory.

Ah, books!

The local library has been our go-to lately for finding puzzles. They don’t even need to be checked out, just borrowed and returned.

The 500-piece puzzles are nice for us because we can get them done in an afternoon.

Geegaws

Most people I know are actually downsizing their geegaw collections, but for a sparkly piece of silver or crystal, the thrift store can be a treasure trove.

I ended up getting the crystal decanter and you can see it has the original label still on it.

I priced new ones on Amazon recently and they are quite expensive. As in the $50-100 range. I got this for $15.

Sorry for that cuckoo look on my face. I was considering smiling but didn’t get it shaped quickly enough.

Dishes and Kitchen

A whole like-new, but very retro and I’m sure old set of dishes was $25. They reminded me of my grandma’s set.

I considered getting them. Honestly! And then I remembered, I’m decluttering.

And then I saw this Corningware baking dish.

Do you remember these?

I never really thought they were attractive, even back in my mom’s kitchen, but it surely made me smile.

Pet Supplies

Of course a dog rescue has a nice selection of pet supplies. I don’t need any pet supplies, but there were two Rae Dun dishes with kitty messages that were tempting.

Wrap Up

This thrifting trip was a short one because Rusty’s is a small store. The bigger stores can be a bit overwhelming, but if you have 20-30 minutes, this is a good way to spend it.

Browsing through this store exercised my smile muscles a few times with good memories.

What do you have on your agenda this weekend? Maybe eating a box of Valentine chocolate?

Well, if you do, and you are a local, my dear friend Cassandra is teaching Zumba Monday night and you might want to check it out for excellent exercise.

I’ll be there!

Thank you for thrifting with me and God bless.

  1. Awesome post, Corine! I absolutely love shopping at Rusty‘s!! It seems that every time I donate there, I end up spending money in there, ha ha! I just can’t help myself, because it’s the best little thrift store ever! I saw that corning ware as well and thought of purchasing it, but without the lid, it was of no use to me. And what a lovely surprise to see that you listed me at the end of your post! I’m so excited to see you on Monday at Zumba, yay! By the way, Scott and I visited Rusty‘s Angels Sanctuary last weekend, and what an amazing place. How wonderful and blessed are all the senior dogs that Emilee there takes in.
