Desert Landscaping

Last month I shared some landscaping ideas that had caught my eye this summer.  Today I’m sharing desert landscaping and seeking your advice.

I mentioned that there are several sore spots in our backyard that I want to address.

Friends Barb and Shira have both done some new projects in their yards that I think could translate to what I’m looking for.

¼ Minus Crushed Rock

Shira and her hub had ¼ Minus crushed rock placed as a walkway through one side of their home.  They edged it with brick pavers to keep it corralled and not let it leach into the decomposed granite.

Additionally, they installed pavers on the other side of their house providing a firm and level surface for outdoor storage.

Expanded Patio

Much like Denisse’s patio expansion she shared with us last October, Shira and hub Gordon expanded their paver patio to cover most of their yard and installed a beautiful pergola.  They have a built in grill.

This low-maintenance remodel allows Shira and Gordon to travel stress free to their hearts’ content.

Artificial Turf

Barb and hub Stuart recently had their side yard remodeled as well.  Their landscape architect designed a long space with artificial pet-friendly turf and a paver seating area.

Mugsey and Marley seem to enjoy the new space!

The area is so pretty and adds space in their yard for cornhole or other outdoor games.

Artificial Turf and Pavers

There is a house in our neighborhood with a stunning yard including views of Daisy Mountain, pretty trees (which I don’t think are technically allowed by our HOA) and the prettiest walkway and front courtyard comprised of artificial turf and pavers.

It looks neat and clean and classy.

I don’t know these neighbors and I hope they don’t mind my sharing pics of their landscaping.  I have no idea what their backyard looks like but I’ll bet it’s nice too.

Wrap Up

These are some of the ideas I really like for desert landscaping that I believe would help me achieve my goal of a pretty backyard, better side yard utilization and low maintenance.

Any ideas of how I could incorporate these ideas into my yard?

Many thanks to my friends for taking and sending pics of their beautiful yards to share here.

Thanks for your input and enjoy your weekend.  Oh, and don’t spend too much time working in your yard!
