How to Host a Simple Birthday Celebration at Home

I hosted a tiny get-together for my dear friend Jenny’s birthday this weekend.

Crazy to say in these so-called golden years, but it is almost impossible to schedule birthday celebrations around travel schedules, appointments, and, well, whatever else life throws our way.

Jenny wanted to gather, but she also wanted the event to be more than low-key. And that is just fine with me.

Just the way I like to roll!

Here is what I did to keep things low-stress for me while requiring the guests to bring nothing but their happy-birthday-singing voices.

The Invitation

I had ChatGPT help with the invitation, which I emailed to everyone. I’m sure my buddy “Chad” will be happy to post a picture of the invitation right here.

It turned out beautiful!

And I think it’s sort of fancy sending out a “formal” invitation for a simple occasion.

The Table

You might remember that I recently decorated my dining table for Thanksgiving with eucalyptus, white pumpkins, pinecones, and candles.

Well, tablescape: COMPLETE.

All I needed were a few appetizer plates, wine glasses on the bar, and paper autumn napkins. The table was set, and I think it turned out really pretty.

No additional decorating required. I love it when a plan comes together!

The Eats

Trader Joe’s and Aldi are my go-to stores when shopping for entertaining. I knew I wanted to assemble an easy charcuterie board (I hear those are going out of style?!), but I couldn’t find a way to visit either store during the week.

We do, however, have a Sprouts nearby.

A small bunch of delicious red grapes, a shiny red apple, and a Boar’s Head deli pack of meat and cheese provided the basis for the tray.

It was easy to fill in the gaps with things we already had on hand, including, you know, pistachio nuts, which are still going strong around here.

A small crudités platter is almost always part of my gatherings. You can never have too much fiber, right?

Dessert

I was going to make something homemade, but at the end of the day, I knew a dessert from Safeway would be a safer bet.

And here is what made it even better!

We had a balmy day, with a break from our frequent rain, so I walked through the park to the store, listened to my audiobook, and soaked up all the happy energy I could.

Tiny pumpkin cheesecake bites made the cut. I put them on a glass tray, and they looked just fancy enough.

The Drinks

Evon gifted a bottle of Cooper’s Hawk Lux Red for the party, and I had a bottle of Lux Chardonnay.

She and I had been waiting for a good excuse to splurge on those wines.

Well, there you go!

Other than that, ice water was the only other offering, and it doesn’t get much simpler than that.

The Tunes

A Motown mix on Spotify was the perfect blend of upbeat favorites without listening to tired classic rock.

Michael Jackson can really add a bit of fun to a celebration!

Good music, a little wine, and a few friends. What more do you need?

The Fireworks

“Fireworks” may be a bit of an exaggeration, but when I see sparklers at the store, I always pick up a box. They make every celebration a bit more jazzy.

It was so much fun to have everyone light a sparkler on the way out the door while we sang Happy Birthday.

Of course, there was no blowing spit all over a birthday cake, but I do hope Jenny realized just how many good wishes were being sent her way!

And that, my friends, is how you celebrate a birthday without turning it into a major production.

A pretty table that was already decorated. Simple food. Store-bought dessert. Wine, music, and sparklers.

Most importantly, time together.

Do you have any tips for a simple but memorable way to host a low-key celebration? I’d love to hear them!

Thank you for joining me this week.

God bless!
